Gaza: an exhibit; a concert and bombings : Gaza: une expo, de la musique et des bombes, 19.11.2013

Yesterday I proudly presented our activestills exhibit "Not a dreamland", about artists and subcultures in the Gaza Strip, at the new French  Institute of Gaza. This work wants to present another side of Gaza, and pays tribute to Gaza diversity and creativity. I was very honoured that the exhibit was associated with a music concert by Gaza Band Watar Band, also featured in the exhibit. See their last video clip here.

There was a great crowd. It was absolutely incredible to see that, knowing that one year ago I was here documenting the attrocities caused by the Israeli military assault "Pillar of Defense". The new French Institute building has a great exhibition place and concert hall; that will provide a safe  and professional place for artists to exhibit and for the bands to perform. There are hardly any concert in Gaza, where it is difficult to get the necessary permits, especially for the hip hop bands.So when there is indeed a concert, the atmosphere and energy is incredible. Many Palestinians stayed after the concert, and there was an improvised concert in the café.

But Gaza and Gaza, just a few hours after the concert, there were several bombings in the South and the North; and as I went to sleep I could hear drones hovering around our heads. The threat- always- is there.

Hier, j'ai pu présenté avec fierté notre exposition d'ActiveStills " Not a dreamland », sur les artistes et cultures alternatives dans la bande de Gaza,au nouvel Institut français de Gaza. Ce travail veut présenter une autre facette de Gaza, et rendre hommage à la diversité et la créativité qui émane de ce petit bout de Palestine qui est devenue la plus grande prison à ciel ouvert du monde. J'ai été très honorée que l'exposition soit associée à un concert de musique du groupe de Gaza Band Watar Band, également en vedette dans l'exposition. Voir leur dernier clip vidéo ici

Une grande foule enthousiaste a assisté à l’évènement, car chaque concert est un événement ici . C'était absolument incroyable de voir cela que  sachant qu'il y tout juste a un an j'étais ici à documenter les atrocités causées par l'attaque militaire israélienne " Pillar of defense ". Le nouveau bâtiment de l'Institut français a un grand lieu d'exposition et une salle de concert , qui fournira un endroit sûr et professionnel pour les artistes et groupes de musique . Il n'y a pratiquement pas de concert à Gaza, où il est difficile d'obtenir les permis nécessaires, en particulier pour les groupes de rap. Alors quand il y a un concert, l'atmosphère et l'énergie sont incroyables. Beaucoup de Palestiniens sont restés après le concert, et il y eu un concert improvisé dans le café.Mais Gaza reste Gaza, et quelques heures après le concert,  il y a eu plusieurs attaques israéliennes au Sud et au Nord , et lorsque je suis allée dormir, je pouvais entendre les drones planant autour de nos têtes. La menace, toujours, existe.

Cultural activism: concert in Beit Sahour from freedom bus / Activisme culturel: concert à Beit Sahour pour la cloture de la tournée du Freedom bus, 01.10.2012

It was a great event in Beit Sahour for the closing of the Freedom Bus tour with a concert featuring hip hop bands DAM and local group Palestinian Street from Dheishe Refugee Camp,  Ministry of Dub-Key and Toot Ard. The concert took place at the heart of the beautiful old city of Beit Sahour and attracted a mix crowd of Palestinians, mainly youth and internationals. The atmosphere was electric, which is quite rare enough in Bethlehem area, the crowd chanted; danced and clapped until late at night.

The Freedom Bus, an initiative of Jenin’s Freedom Theatre, uses interactive theatre and cultural activism to bear witness, raise awareness and build alliances throughout occupied Palestine and beyond.

C'était une très belle soirée à Beit Sahour pour la clôture de la tournée du Freedom Bus avec un concert de groupes de hip-hop ( DAM et Palestinian street- un groupe local palestinien du camp de réfugiés Dheishe), Ministère de Dub-Key et Toot Ard. Le concert a eu lieu au cœur de la  vieille ville magnifique de Beit Sahour et a attiré une foule mix de Palestiniens, principalement des jeunes et d'internationaux. L'atmosphère était électrique, ce qui est assez rare dans la région de Bethléem, la foule a chanté, dansé et applaudi jusque tard dans la nuit.

Le Freedom Bus est une initiative du Théâtre de la Liberté de Jénine et utilise le théâtre interactif et  l'activisme culturel pour  témoigner, sensibiliser et former des réseaux de solidarité à travers la Palestine occupée et au-delà.
