A cool short made by the trainers for the Voices Beyond Walls workshop in Gaza / un coirt metrage realise par les animateurs de Gaza de VBW

A video short produced by youth as part of a Digital Media and Storytelling Training of Trainers course conducted by Voices Beyond Walls in Gaza City, June 28-30, 2010. Participants were asked to shoot and edit a creative "1-minute" video short at the end of the course. This was one of the most creative ones produced.

The short video depicts a day in the life of a street pole in Gaza City, with the hilarious and touching moments with various pedestrians encountering it.

We started our Voices Beyond walls 2010 Project- "Re-imagining" (see description below) by a great pilot project of aerial mapping in Al Aroub Camp, led by MIT expert Jeff Warren. Jeff is a researcher at the MIT Media Lab conducting photo mapping work using low-altitude kites and balloons. He's done this mapping work with communities in slums near Peru, fisherman during the oil spill near the coast of Louisiana, and many other areas. Jeff did the pilot on the roof of Al Aroub Play and Animation center, together with Voices Beyond Walls team, trainers from the center who will work with us on the Re-Imagining project, and some children. Everybody was amazed on how high the kite could fly, bringing up a simple digital camera, which was continuously taking pictures. The results were striking. We do hope to use these technics during the actual workshops. As Jeff explained, costs can be reduced by making kites or balloons from recycling materials, making it accessible for communities.

Nous avons commencé notre programme 2010 Voices Beyond walls intitule "Ré-imaginer" (voir description ci-dessous) par un projet pilote de cartographie aérienne dans le camp de refugies de Al Aroub , mené par le expert de la MIT Jeff Warren. Jeff est un chercheur au MIT Media Lab specialiste de cartographie photo à l'aide des cerfs-volants et de ballons volant à basse altitude . Il a fait ce travail avec les communautés dans des bidonvilles près du Pérou, avec des pêcheurs touches par la marée noire près de la côte de la Louisiane, et dans de nombreux autres secteurs. Jeff a conduit l'atelier pilote sur le toit du centre d'animation de Al Aroub avec l'equipe de voices beyond walls, les formateurs du centre qui vont travailler avec nous sur le projet Re-imaginer et quelques enfants palestiniens. Tout le monde était ébahi de la hauteur a laquelle le cerf-volant a pu voler, portant avec lui un simple appareil photo numérique, qui avait ete mis en prise de vue continue. Les résultats ont été surprenants avec des photos prises de 2 a 300 metres de haut. Nous espérons pouvoir utiliser ces techniques durant les ateliers. Comme l'a expliqué Jeff, les coûts peuvent être réduits en construisant les cerfs-volants ou les ballons avec des materiaux de recyclage.

Launching the Re-imagining Project in West Bank and Gaza in Summer 2010

This summer Voices Beyond Walls team is launching a program of parallel workshops in the West Bank and Gaza, as part of our new Re-imagining Project.

The “Re-imagining Project” is a program of digital video, photography and storytelling workshops that supports Palestinian children and youth in expressing their cultural identity, personal narratives, and creative visions through participatory digital media.

This project is a collaboration among Voices Beyond Walls, Les Enfants, Le Jeu et l’Education (EJE), UNRWA and participating community centers in Al Aroub and Jabaliya refugee camps.

The program consists of the following key activities in summer 2010:

I. Conducting two 3-day Training of Trainers (ToT) sessions in Ramallah and Gaza City between June 28 to June 30, 2010. It will be conducted with 20-30 Palestinian volunteers from local youth centers, to provide participatory youth media training and prepare them to serve as potential workshop facilitators.

II. Conducting at least two 3-week digital storytelling workshops between July 4th to July 25th, 2010 with around 18-24 children (both boys and girls aged 10-14), in collaboration with community centers in Al Aroub camp in the West Bank and Jabaliya camp in Gaza. Many joint activities will be conducted among children in both workshops via video conferencing and online sharing.

III. Conducting baseline surveys, ongoing monitoring, and follow-up evaluations with all participants in the training and workshops in collaboration with EJE, UNRWA and the Gaza Community Mental Health Program (GCMHP).

IV. Screenings and exhibitions of the youth media work in Jerusalem, West Bank and Gaza, as well as international festivals and venues abroad in 2010-2011.

We have an exciting international and local team of filmmakers, artists, photographers, researchers, educators and community youth activists involved this year. The project is sponsored in part by the Genevieve McMillan-Reba Stewart Foundation and the MIT Center for Future Civic Media at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Lancements des Ateliers Voices beyond walls 2010

Le "Re-imagining project" est un programme mêlant vidéo numérique, photographie et de création narrative pour des enfants et jeunes palestiniens afin de leur donner les outils pour exprimer leur identité culturelle, leur récits personnels, et leurs visions créatives grâce grace aux médias numériques.

Ce projet est une collaboration entre Voices Beyond Walls, Les Enfants, Le Jeu et l'Education (EJE), l'UNRWA et la participation des centres d'animation de dans Al Aroub et camps de réfugiés de Jabaliya. Voices Beyond walls est un collectif menant des ateliers de digital story-telling tous les étés en Cisjordanie avec des jeunes palestiniens. Depuis 2006, plus de 60 courts-métrages ont été ainsi produits. Cette annee, Voices Beyond walls mènera pour la première fois ses ateliers dans la bande de Gaza.

Le programme comprend les activités clés suivantes pour l'été 2010:

I. Réaliser de deux formation de 3 jours de formateurs, avec une session à Ramallah au Centre Culturel Français et à Gaza entre le 28 et 30 Juin 2010. Elles seront ouvertes à 20-30 animateurs palestiniens des centres d'animation, afin de leur fournir les outils nécessaires en médias participatifs pour conduire les ateliers.

II. Effectuer au moins deux ateliers de 3 semaines de digital-story telling entre le 4 et 25 Juillet 2010, avec a chaque fois un groupe d'une vingtaine d'enfants (garçons et filles de 10-14 ans), en collaboration avec les centres d'animation dans le camp de réfugiés de Al Aroub en Cisjordanie et dans le camp de Jabaliya dans la bande de Gaza. De nombreuses activités conjointes seront menées avec les enfants dans les deux ateliers par vidéoconférence et le partage via internet.

III. Mener des recherches approfondies, par un suivi permanent et des évaluations avec tous les participants à la formation et des ateliers en collaboration avec EJE, l'UNRWA et le Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP) de la bande de Gaza.

IV. Organiser des projections et des expositions des résultats des ateliers à Jérusalem, en Cisjordanie et à Gaza, ainsi que dans festivals internationaux en 2010-2011.

Pour mener à bien ce programme, nous avons une équipe de palestiniens et d'internationaux de cinéastes, artistes, photographes, chercheurs, éducateurs et de jeunes impliques dans les centres d'animation impliqués cette année.
